Tibet : Transportation

These days most of the people want to travel Tibet. With the transportation network build up, it is easier to get to Tibet with different access. Rail, Road and Air all are very convenient. The most popular way to enter Tibet now is taking the train-the sky train from Beijing and land cruiser drive from Kathmandu, Nepal . On the way to Lhasa from Beijing , you can enjoy the unique high land sceneries that you will miss by taking the flights, and at the same time, adjust yourself to the altitude gradually; the flight is faster and convenient, but see less, hitting the road, it will take a longer time to get to Tibet and pretty tough. The biggest benefit is that you can spend more time at the wonderful sceneries and enjoy them all the way to Tibet.

Tibet also opens both international and domestic airlines. You can take the regular direct domestic flights from Kathmandu,Nepal (1 Hour) Chengdu (2hours' flying time), Beijing (6hrs), Shanghai(8hrs), Chongqing (2hrs), Xi'an (3hrs), Guangzhou(5hrs) and Kunming (4hrs)to Tibet. The international route is from Kathmandu 2hours flying (capital of Nepal). Gonggar Airport Tibet is at the Gongga County in the south of Lhasa 100 kilometers away. It takes around 2 hours' driving from Lhasa with old road and one one hour with new road(55km).


Train to and from Lhasa:

It is now possible to go to Tibet by train via the Qinghai-Tibet railway, the world's highest altitude railway. While traveling to Tibet by train takes much longer than by plane, you will be witness to thousands of miles of the most stunning landscapes in the world, rolling by outside your window.

Lhasa - Chengdu (45 hours 40 minutes, distance: 3360km )
Lhasa - Chongqing ( 46 hours 32 minutes, distance: 3654km )
Lhasa - Shanghai ( 48 hours 58 minutes, distance: 4373km )
Lhasa - Guangzhou (56 hours 10 minutes, distance: 4980km )

Other possible destinations: Golmud, Xining, Lanzhou and Xi'an

The train departs Beijing west-station at 21:30 p.m and there are 6 stops in between Beijing and Lhasa as below:

Shijia Zhuang : 2 minutes
Xian : 6 minutes
Lanzhou : 15 minutes
Xining : 20 minutes
Gulmod : 20 minutes
Nagchu : 6 minutes

Arrival time at Lhasa station is at 17:30 p.m on day 3
